On November 29 the everis Foundation Essay Awards ceremony has been celebrated at the Casino de Madrid. In this, the tenth year, we are honored to have the presence of Juan Pérez Mercader, Physicist and Astrobiologist and Cristina Garmendia, Minister of Science and Innovation.
Juan Pérez Mercader was born in Alcalá de Guadaira, Seville. He is physicist and astrobiologist. His research focuses on the application of theoretical physics to the knowledge of the universe, from the largest to the smallest scales and on the origin of life. He has been identified as one of the most prominent scientist in Spain.
He is a CSIC Research Professor (now on extended leave of absence). From 2010 he has been working at Harvard University where he is a Senior Research Fellow, and he is in charge of the Origin of Life Initiative. This project, on the borders of biology, physics, chemistry, computer science and engineering, aims to design and synthesize bio-inspired artificial systems that recreate the simplest organisms.
Cristina Garmendia Mendizabal holds a doctorate in Biology from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. She is founder of Genetrix, a biotechnology company and a member of advisory board at ESADE. She is currently Minister of Science and Innovation.
